origin tunnel

Tunnel began as a documentation (of a sort) of the deconstruction/ depainting of a large triptych from 1987, the wing panels of which were reconfigured as a new, but related piece also entitled tunnel, completed c. 2002. What was, at its inception, meant to be a dozen or so pages grew to over 200, and constitutes an arcane examination of the processes of my conceptual evolution in the years between the two artworks. The original pages were all composed of hand cut and pasted text and image combination and reformation, and was colour laser printed and bound by myself as an edition of four. This digital version is scanned from the originals. The pages were designed to be seen in pairs in book form, and after considering posting it as individual pages, I decided to post it in the paired page format you'll find below, after this preface. musaeum oblivio futurus - tunnel deconstruction

The notion of a museum of future oblivion came about with, and sees its first remanifestation in the 2002 Tunnel de-painting, though the artwork that actually bears the "Musaeum Oblivio Futurus" title is this dyed felt collage from 2001.

musaeum case

This Musaeum Case was mailed to Montreal among many mail art exchanges with Parc Avenue Holdings. During the course of this three year interaction, Parc Ave.’s exhortation to document the Tunnel deconstruction process gave rise to the Tunnel book.

musaeum case

After a couple of years in Montreal, the Musaeum Case was mailed back with an abundance of added items, like this "Nothing Fails Like Government" print on cloth.

musaeum case

I explicitly indicated I desired the return of this case due to the personal sentimental value of a number of included items, all other mailings were retained by Parc Avenue Holdings. As this was prior to my having a digital camera, there are few photos of the multitude of work which was mailed off.

musaeum case

There are however, a great number of analog photos of the happy return of the Musaeum Case. This is yet another.

tunnel 2002

In 2001 or thereabouts, the two wing panels from 1987’s Death of a Virgin were turned on their side and joined to create the platform for what became Tunnel. I had come to despise the earlier work as the product of ill conceived contrivance, but it served to provide a cleansing transition in its destruction/deconstruction.

During first round of scraping sometime in 2006 or 2007. After the tumult of the Tunnel period and a series of performance based projects, I took something of a hiatus from collage and painting between 2003 and 2007.

De-painting of Virgin c. Panel

Luckily the remaining center panel gave the opportunity to revisit the whole transitional process of Tunnel et al, and after long while, make a return to my favourite medium of collage - with a little kickstart via gesture painting.

picture haven 2007

Picture Haven was a pleasure and a struggle. I hoped to attain and even build on the looser approach that Tunnel had brought, but my fastidious nature and desire to fuss endlessly over a larger work came to override some of the nice, rough developments early on.

Picture Haven – Detail

Nonetheless, it was a fruitful engagement with an image area. Necessity.

This is why we do it.
